Waste Recycling

Every person in the UK produces about 600 kilograms of waste a year, while less than one third is collected and recycled. If the current trend continues, the UK as well as the rest of the world will turn into one large landfill. People are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of waste recycling but according to the statistics, too many people do not their homework when it comes to sorting their waste and properly disposing it. But this is a project in which every single person counts because it is impossible not to create any waste no matter how much you try.
Waste does not only pose a problem due to its accumulation. Many materials need decades or even centuries to decompose and meanwhile severely pollute the soil and water. Incineration is not the solution to waste problem either because it pollutes the air and increases the levels of carbon dioxide which is the number one cause of the greenhouse effect and the global climate change. In addition, tons of still reusable materials are discarded, while the pressure on non-renewable sources continues to increase due to the population growth.

The waste problem will not go away on its own. Waste recycling is by far the best solution to all the above mentioned problems related to waste because almost everything can be recycled. Paper, glass, plastic, metal, clothes and even biological waste,… you name it. Paper for instance, can be can be easily reused. By collecting unneeded paper, you will help save a number of trees because most paper comes from trees which, by the way, help lower the carbon dioxide levels as they absorb this harmful gas and produce oxygen. As you most likely know, metal is a non-renewable material which makes its collection and reuse even more important. Plastic, on the other hand, is a synthetic material which can be easily reproduced but it degrades very slowly and severely pollutes the environment.
Just about everything that ends up in a trash bin poses a unique problem to the environment. Waste recycling does not eliminate all environmental concerns related to waste but it most certainly helps significantly reduce pollution, of course, under condition that everyone recycle and dispose their waste properly. For that reason you should start paying more attention to your waste and separate plastic, metal, glass, etc. from other types of waste and dispose them properly.
In addition to proper waste recycling, you should also try to reduce your waste as much as you can. For a start, you can get a reusable bag instead of taking a disposable one each time you buy something at the grocery and think twice before you throw anything in the thrash. You may find it rubbish but there are many people who may find some of the things you throw away very useful such as old toys and clothes for example. You can donate useful things you do not need anymore or perhaps even sell them. You would be surprised what kind of stuff people are looking for and even willing to pay for. After all, just think on the proverb “one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure“.
